Our Environmental Commitment
We are proud to share the progress we have made through our Climate Commitment programme, helping us reduce our carbon footprint and operate more sustainably across the group.
In 2023, we invested £250,000 in a solar array, which has transformed the way we power our operations. This investment has enabled us to become a net contributor to the National Grid, while ensuring that we never draw electricity during peak periods.
In May 2024, the entire operation here operated solely from renewable energy, demonstrating the impact our investment is having.
Our daytime consumption from the grid is now effectively zero. The only grid electricity we use is between approximately 2.30am and 3.00am, when we charge our batteries. This allows us to store energy ahead of the morning peak period, with this electricity sourced entirely from renewable energy.
“It’s thrilling to see how the ‘Solar System’ is operating and where we are as a business in terms of our Climate Commitment.
— Andy Roe, Director
Our commitment to sustainability goes beyond our solar investment. We have also introduced electric vans and cars across the business, which we use for jobs, collections and transporting stock.
We have taken practical steps to reduce waste and improve the efficiency of our day-to-day operations. We have implemented zero-waste initiatives, including providing reusable drinkware to reduce single-use plastics and introducing more circular approaches to office and bathroom supplies.
Across our facilities, we have upgraded to smarter, more energy-efficient technology, including LED lighting, motion sensors and smart thermostats, alongside improvements to insulation and overall energy efficiency. These measures help us reduce unnecessary energy consumption while making better use of the energy we generate.
We have also adopted a Digital-First approach, reducing our reliance on printing by digitising document management and using digital processes wherever possible. This helps us reduce paper consumption and the environmental impact associated with unnecessary printing.
Where cleaning products and chemical-based materials are required, we are also looking to use more environmentally friendly alternatives, including biodegradable and plant-based products that are kinder to the environment and help reduce the impact on local water systems.
We continue to review the way we purchase, use and dispose of materials across our operations, looking for further opportunities to reduce waste, improve efficiency and support a more circular approach.
Reducing our carbon footprint also means considering how we travel to and from work.
We encourage colleagues to use local tram services and public transport where possible, helping to reduce emissions associated with commuting. We also support colleagues who cycle to work, providing a more sustainable alternative to travelling by car.
Our transition towards electric vehicles also forms an important part of our wider approach to greener travel, helping us reduce emissions from the vehicles used across our operations.
From the way we power our operations to the vehicles we use on the road, the resources we consume and the way our colleagues travel to work, we are continually looking for ways to reduce our environmental impact.
Our commitment is ongoing, and we will continue investing in practical solutions that help create a cleaner, more efficient future for generations to come.
